A great option for the serious beginner, the Sky Watcher Explorer 130P Reflector Astronomy Telescope with EQ2 Mount (10712) also obtains excellent praise from more seasoned astronomers. This telescope is a highly capable all-rounder for the study of the Moon, bright planets, nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters. It has an incredibly helpful 130mm of light gathering aperture and a great parabolic main mirror. Comes with the EQ2 equatorial mount, which when polar aligned will make it simple to follow things as they move across the night sky with its slow motion control wires.

Premium-quality Parabolic Primary Mirrors, often found in larger, more expensive telescopes, are used in the Sky Watcher Explorer 130P models to eliminate spherical aberrations and produce even sharper, higher-contrast images that are full of detail. A parabolic mirror, or more precisely a "paraboloidal" mirror, is ground to a shape that perfectly focuses all incoming light rays on axis. Additionally, to lessen diffraction spikes and light loss, they have 0.5mm Ultra-Thin secondary mirror supports.

'Fast' focal length reflectors with spherical primary mirrors are prone to spherical aberrations, which are eliminated by the use of high-quality parabolic primary mirrors. All the light beams are parabolized by the mirrors to focus on a single point, producing clear, contrasty images that are rich in detail.

Perfect Starter Telescope
02 January 2014  |

Arrived promptly, and after some initial set up (it's a more substantial bit of kit then you may imagine) it was ready for use.

Took it out on the first night and it was a nice clear evening for some gazing. Jupiter was looking bright, so using the red dot finder it was quite quick to lock onto it. Jupiter was an amazing sight, we saw the four big moons of course, but more than that a number of the cloud bands on the surface. Pretty amazing that with something this price you can get a nice view of Jupiter and its bands.

The telescope itself is very solid, the tripod is very sturdy yet nice and lightweight. A great piece of kit for the price, I suggest also getting a x2 barlow for it as the telescope can certainly handle the extra magnificiation.
