Recordable DVD has many formats, these include: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM. They have various capacities, up to 17.4 GB, although the most common is the 4.7GB disc. The two most popular formats are currently DVD-R and DVD+R. Manufacturers are currently split on which will ultimately be the most dominant and popular format although DVD-R appears to be leading the way at this stage.
Manufacturers supporting these formats are Philips, Sony, Toshiba and Samsung. Disks are manufactured by Bulkpaq, Princo, Datawrite and Tuffdisc and are compatible with most of today's home based and PC based DVD recorders.
